A key challenge is the insufficient understanding of deformation and shrinkage behavior during processing, which directly affects precision and hinders the advancement of PM gear molds. Despite this, PM gears—particularly in automotive and motorcycle applications—account for a significantly larger share of PM parts by both weight and quantity, reflecting their rapidly growing importance.
Powder metallurgy enables efficient, high-volume, and cost-effective production of high-strength, high-precision gears such as spur gears, helical gears, and bevel gears. These components are critical in applications like manual transmissions, where surface strength and wear resistance are essential even if full density is not required. As material and forming technology progresses, PM gears are meeting increasingly strict quality standards, while expanding in variety and performance.
