Common Gear Types, Characteristics and Application Scenarios of Reducers

1. Helical Cylindrical Gear — [Most‑widely‑used for Enclosed Reducers]

Applications: R, K, S, F four‑series hardened‑tooth gear reducers, conveyors, mixers, fans and water pumps

Shaft layout: Parallel‑shaft input and output

Advantages: Gradual tooth engagement, smooth transmission, low noise, high load‑bearing capacity, suitable for high‑speed and heavy‑duty conditions

Disadvantages: Generates axial force, and bearings need to withstand axial thrust

Reduction ratio: Single‑stage i=1‑6; multi‑stage ratio up to i=6‑400

2. Spur Cylindrical Gear

Applications: Low‑speed general‑purpose reducers, small‑size gearboxes, open‑gear transmissions

Shaft layout: Parallel‑shaft

Advantages: Simple machining, low cost, no axial force

Disadvantages: Heavy impact, high noise, not suitable for high‑speed operation

Peripheral speed: ≤5m/s generally

3. Bevel Gear (Straight‑Bevel Gear / Spiral Bevel Gear)

Applications: Right‑angle output reducers, K‑series reducers, steering transmissions

Shaft layout: Two shafts intersect at 90° (vertical transmission)

Straight‑bevel gear: For low‑speed operation with high noise; Spiral bevel gear: Smooth transmission and higher load capacity

4. Planetary Gear (Planetary Gear Train)

Components: Sun gear + Planet gear + Internal ring gear + Planet carrier

Applications: Servo planetary reducers, robots, winches, small‑sized high‑precision reducers

Shaft layout: Coaxial input and output

Advantages: Compact size, high torque, coaxial design, high precision and low backlash

Reduction ratio: Single‑stage i=3‑10; two‑stage i=10‑100

5. Worm‑and‑Worm‑gear Pair

Applications: Worm‑gear reducers (WP, WPA series)

Shaft layout: 90° crossed shafts

Advantages: Large single‑stage reduction ratio i=10‑80; self‑locking capability (worm drives worm gear, reverse‑drive locked); quiet operation

Disadvantages: Low transmission efficiency, high heat generation, vulnerable worm‑gear wear, unsuitable for long‑term continuous high‑power operation

6. Herringbone Gear (Double‑helical Gear)

Applications: High‑power heavy‑duty reducers, heavy‑load equipment for mining, metallurgy and cement industries

Equivalent to a pair of oppositely‑oriented helical gears; axial forces counteract each other

Advantages: Capable of ultra‑high‑power, heavy‑load and high‑speed transmission

Disadvantages: High machining difficulty and production cost

7. Internal Gear (Internal Ring Gear)

Rarely used independently; mainly applied in planetary reducers as a fixed ring gear.
